Murphy

Murphy is a 18 month old red Dobie that presented to us for coughing and gagging. He was bringing up undigested food and foam (a regurgitation). He had surgery elsewhere nine days ago to see if he had something in his stomach. Nothing was found and he was no better. He was on antibiotics, and other medications for his "stomach ache"

On physical exam he was skinny and but not running a fever. He had some loose stool on the thermometer. His Parvo test was negative.

During the exam, Dr. Dayton felt a movable object when she palpated his throat. It was suspected that Murphy had a foreign object in his esophagus. X-Rays were taken of his throat.  On the X-Ray we could see the linear foreign body. (yellow arrow)

Murphy was scheduled for an endoscopy. Under a general anesthetic, Dr. Crumley explored the esophagus.  After entering the throat about 6 inches he felt resistance. The camera revealed the stick that was lodged in Murphy's throat. In the picture on the left, the end of the stick is covered with dog food.

The stick went all the way down into Murphy's stomach. Dr. Crumley was able to use the endoscope to pull the stick out just far enough to then grasp the stick with forceps and pull it out the rest of the way. Murphy recovered fine from the anesthesia and went home the same day feeling great.

It is hard to believe that a dog would be able to swallow a stick that long.
