Rosie
Rosie is a 10 year old
Schnauzer, spayed female. She came into the hospital with a T shirt wrapped
around her bleeding leg stump, her paw was in a tray of ice. Rosie's leg had
been torn off by the dog next door, through the fence! She also had a
dislocated elbow, and radial nerve paralysis (an avulsion of the nerves
found under the arm, when her arm was pulled so violently away from her body
wall). She was surprisingly alert.
She was treated for shock, given heavy pain medication,
and the stump was bandaged. The following day Rosie underwent an amputation
and scapulectomy (shoulder blade removal). She had a pain patch applied to
give her morphine type medication continuously for 3 days, was given
antibiotics, and intravenous fluids and other supportive care.
She did great after surgery and
went home three days later. She was wrapped to prevent fluid accumulation at
the surgery site. On recheck 1 week later she was doing great, and even
better when we took the stitches out fourteen days after the surgery. She
has been one incredible dog to undergo such a terrible ordeal, and maintain
an great attitude.
