Traveling With Your Pet

Check with your veterinarian:

  • Are vaccines up to date? Any additional vaccinations needed

  • Health certificate (for interstate/ international travel needs to be with 10 days of  departure date)

  • Heartworm/flea prevention?

  • Any other medications needed/ prescriptions to refill (motions sickness) or take   along ?

  • Identification (microchip, tattoo, other) ?

  • Address any other concerns (e.g. motion sickness or what to do if pet becomes ill) ? There is a great new anti-nausea prescription medication "Cerenia" ask us for more info.

Don't Forget

  • Plan extra time/ stops for exercise and potty breaks.

  • Check with airline for specific regulations/ requirements.

  • Check with airports for information about pet exercise/rest areas.

  • Check U.S. and Territory Animal Import Regulations Web site (car travel) forany relevant requirements.

  • List places to stay overnight that will accept pets and/or list boarding facilities. 

  • Get contact information for a local veterinarian at your place destination.

  • If staying at someone’s house, check if there will be any potential problems with the pet staying (e.g. allergic children or aggressive animals).

 Don' forget to bring...

  • Health history form (including your veterinarian contact information).

  • Proof of rabies and all vaccinations.

  • Health certificate if needed for interstate and international.

  • Pet’s regular food, jug of water, and bowls.

  • Pet first aid kit.

  • Extra leashes, pet seat belt, and/or carrier/crate for confinement in car and at destination.

  • Necessary medications, heartworm/flea preventative, and/or written prescriptions.

  • Recent photograph of your pet.

  • Collar with tags.
